Today I had a preliminary meeting with Chris, my technical director, to discuss set design for Shrew. I had basic ideas of what I needed (entrances & exits, what was going to be elaborate, what would be reasonably minimalist, etc).
You know that line about plans and surviving first contact?
Sometimes, it works out in your favour too.
I can’t talk about it much yet (this would be the “how to torture the director” part) because it wouldn’t be fair to Chris, but he’s made a couple suggestions for design elements that never occurred to me and will make the set look so good and give the actors some fun things to interact with as well.
I promise – when I can speak of it, I will be. For now, I’ll just say that once again, I am the luckiest girl in the world because I have enormously talented people who like working with me. If I have learned one thing in my years of theatre, it is that – finding talented people whom you can work with well is the best gig – my hair-brained schemes wind up finding fertile ground to grow into brilliant things.
In the meantime, I’ll go back to bouncing in my chair in excitement.
