I remember hearing from both my parents, some from my sister, and lots from my family that they loved me when I was growing up. I don't really ever remember hearing my parents' friends tell my folks (or vice versa) that they loved each other.
I regularly hear it between me and my friends, and even the children of my friends. And I believe it.
Yes, the world's going to hell in a handbasket on so many fronts, but that those in my life who I choose to keep there feel that they can tell me that, and hear it in return, without the associated social crap that might have been what kepts the previous generation from doing so? That's a good thing.

"It's not fair!"
Who the hell told you it was ever going to be fair? If you're waiting around for things to be fair, don't hold your breath.
To paraphrase one of my favourite movies - "Life isn't fair. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something."

One of the gunman's teachers had him removed from her class because he was moody, she believed he was suicidal, and because she felt he was threatening to the other members of the class. Strongly enough that she said she'd quit if he wasn't removed.
Uh - if someone is that potentially dangerous, given a culture now that is seeing the sorts of things that happened at VA Tech more often now, maybe that should have been a red flag for someone to take a closer look and see if there was a way to help this guy before he decided to start killing people?

Bigotry is wrong and all, but I have a beef. Jews control the money, they control who gets into power. Gods forbid you ever actually try to get into their "special" little world. Stupid rituals, stupid rules, and if you make the mistake of falling in love with one and want to convert, there's a line a mile deep of sheer raving bullshit you have to go through before they believe you really want to become Jewish, and sometimes even then, they don't let you.
Offensive as all hell, isn't it?
Do a replace of Jewish for American.
Just because you don't think that you're hurting anyone because you're a Canadian trashing Americans doesn't mean it doesn't hit home. Just because you didn't mean my husband or my son doesn't mean I can read your mind and know that.
I know I am guilty of generalizations as well. Congrats, I'm human. It is one of the things I've been working on improving, because I've watched the internal anger and betrayal my husband has dealt with over the years listening to people who claim to be friends here tearing into "Americans". I have zero intention of stepping back on this now, especially as I have a small boy who doesn't need yet another reason to feel like people hate him for things he has not power over.
If it's offensive with one tag, it's offensive. Period.

"The witty woman is a tragic figure in American life. Wit destroys eroticism and eroticism destroys wit, so women must choose between taking lovers and taking no prisoners."
- Florence King, humorist and conservative columnist formerly of "National Review" magazine.
Wit and eroticism are mutually exclusive? I don't think so. You don't have the ability to pull of actual wit, you're not really sexy, so sayeth the Nita.

I finished Variable Star, the latest Spider Robinson book that was based from notes from RAH.
My comments while I was reading it was "This is so not a Heinlein book - if for no other reason than the women aren't nearly strong enough characters and there's WAY too much music bits in it". It's a good book, get me not wrong (okay, I think the ending bites juicy chunks of ass, but that's just me). It's just not RAH.
Then I start reading Robinson's epilogue about how he wound up writing this book. That it was from notes, and he was specifically told not to write a Heinlein book, but to write the best Robinson book he could from RAH's notes. Okay, fair enough - that explains the music and girls. I like Robinson, but I could use most of the women in his stories for cheap tissue paper. Then I see that while there were 8 pages of notes, plus a bunch of cuecards, apparently the important 8th page (aka, that had the ending) was missing when he got it. That explains the ending - how do you wrap this story up without having a Cat Who Walks Through Walls or Number of the Beast problem - aka the ending bites.
I'm glad I bought it - I like both authors. I'm glad I didn't expect anything in particular.

For the record, in case anyone cares what my opinion is, hating someone because they don't hold exactly the same beliefs, lifestyle, sexual preferences, religions, dangly bits, etc is plain old stupid in my mind.
The one place where I have no patience for is stupid.
(Definition time:
Ignorant = Doesn't know, can learn.
Dumb = Doesn't know, can't, for whatever reason, learn.
Stupid = Doesn't know, doesn't want to learn.)
I'm not likely reposting any of the "repost this if you think X is wrong". However, this is my default opinion.
I do hate some people. Mostly because they have hurt people I care about, or me, in specific, deliberate manners. And I'm human.
I cannot see the point in hating someone for skin colour, relgion, sexual preference or status, etc. If it doesn't harm me & mine, I don't see it as a big deal.

In another friends LJ, there has been discussion about what makes a person such-and-such.
Here's my take, just in case anyone here didn't know this already.
You tell me you're X, for a value of X, and I'll take that at face value. I may ask why or how or otherwise delve, but that's a "for value of X, my curiosity may vary" thing.
You got dangly bits or not - not relevant, unless I'm trying to access them.
You believe a certain way or not - only important on that "ooh, look, someone I can discuss/debate ideas with"
You're coloured a certain way? Skippy - I've got 3 races (that I know of) running around in me - it is *so* not relevant to me.
You have sex with Q people? Sure - unless I'm one of them, I'm less interested in the running commentary. ONE CAVEAT - if they cannot give consent, they don't qualify. Yes, that means I am discriminatory against people who practice pedophilia, necrophilia and beastality. Don't like that, that's fine with me.
Anything else you wanted to know, ask. I have a low tolerance for fools, and a relatively high tolerance for questions.

and they were discussing hate speech and the approach of most western democracies with regards to hate speech in relation to freedom of speech.
One of the callers asked what seemed to be a reasonable, yet *to me* dumb question. "I belong to relgion X. Religion X's tenents say that behaviour Y is wrong. Where is the line drawn between disagreeing with the behaviour, because your religion says you should and hate speech?"
To which my immediate response was pretty much "Gee - the difference between, 'I believe that behaviour Y is wrong.' and 'You should die because you do Y, you sick motherfucker, and I'll encourage everyone I know to help you die, asswipe.'"
I think most people I encounter could recognize the difference.
Why is is that conflict is so painfully clear to me, but it seems like the majority of the world around me just doesn't get it?

Listening to CBC Radio this morning.
They were talking about the first set of refugees/evacuees out of Beirut to Cypress. Apparently there was much bitching & moaning because a) the ferry ride was longer than anticipated, b) there was no food or water (okay, I can see that one, at least on the water side of things), c) there were no beds, and d) there were 250 on the ferry, when it was originally set up for 100.
Um...
They took you, on emergency notice, for free out of a WAR ZONE.
Gee. And it wasn't a cruise ship.
Sorry, pumpkin, but you're not getting much sympathy from me.

George Lucas MUST be stopped
This is the bit that kills me:
So, lemme see if I get this right....Luke gets up, eats, does his chores, maybe goes to the station, and plugs womprats, then goes to sleep. Lather rinse repeat. Oh - and whines a lot.
The one character that needs to have a pretty much nondescript background so that Star Wars through to Jedi is actual real growth as a character for him - this is the one that Lucas decides will be hiscash cow principal character for a series?
*headdesk*
I loved the original three.
I cannot believe what shite there has been since.
*sigh*

I have that human beings aren't a waste of space.
I mean "human beings" in general.
I'm listening to his show. He's talking about the fact that his band has gone through many changes over the years. He occasionally gets women coming up saying "My boyfriend used to play X for you - touch me.." And the obligatory vaguely funny "no freaking way, Lady".
Then he says, "But if a kid comes up to me and says, 'My dad used to play bass for you.' Then my response is 'And he was the best damned bass player we've ever had.' Cause you know - there's enough crap in the world. If a guy has to tell his kid that he used to be in my band to make himself a hero in his kid's eyes, I'm going to back him all the way."
yah, yah - there's issues with what happens when the kid finds out the truth (if it is a lie), but damn.
It's nice to know that.
Yah, I'm a sap. I also believe in letting people have heros. Especially kids.

2) I don't give a rat's ass who anyone loves/fucks/grows peas with, presuming all are capable of consent.
3) I really don't get the vitrol.
Listening to people who are ranting and railing about the "vicious" "blackhearted" "evil" "smallminded" etc, etc, etc of the opposition.
Listening to people talking about a war.
Listening to people saying how "we won".
Wars don't beget peace. Never have, to this poor historian's knowledge.
Hating the other side doesn't beget a better life.
No, I'm not proffering Christian concepts, but I just don't get it.
Hate begets hate - both ways, guys. It's not like the far-right wingers don't know that you hate them right back. That won't make their hate go away.

Sorry - rant that started from a comment from a woman (presumably - hell, I don't know what gender anyone is any more) on a friend's LJ that women get raped, and men's chances are "practically nil".
According to this, 3% of American men have been raped (at least and reported it), and one in 10 rape victims (again, reported) are male.
I don't care if the cry in response is "see - 9 women and only one man" - ANYONE getting raped is a fucking crime. And having been someone who was convinced no one would believe her if she reported the rape, making such assine claims as "practically nil" mean that men are even LESS likely to report, simply because our jackassed society says that it doesn't happen...and starts the "so what's wrong with you" bullshit.
For women it used to be "you were dressed provocatively/in the wrong place at the wrong time". Men it's "you're not really a *man*"
It doesn't matter. Rape is a crime. Someone who is raped shouldn't have to put up with ASSININE BULLSHIT from anyone. Male. Female. I don't give a shit.
Anyone that tells someone who's had a crime committed against them that it shouldn't have happened to them, and so therefore it doesn't "really count" needs to have their head examined with a clue by four.
Fuck, this makes me mad.....

I'm a geek. And apparently an old geek. I listen to CBC.
Yah, Radio One.
Anyway, listening last week, and towards the end of the Talking Books segment, one of the fellows made a comment that engendered ( this email )
I figured nothing would happen.
Today I get ( a reply )
Nice to know that I actually got through to a person. We'll see if Victor has any comment to make...
Meanwhile, yay me.

The NHL took another hit in the shorts today.
ESPN pulled the plug on talks for TV rights with the NHL - something about the NHL refusing to budge on it's $60M (USD) for rights to something that might or might not happen...
I love this quote:
You mean, that product that no one has really seen since early last summer? Or really cares about any more?
*giggling*
I'm glad to see that the NHL still bargains as well as it has been doing...
Oh, and apparently ESPN did better in it's ratings with alternate programming last year than it did when it had the NHL...yah -you're going to get big bucks out of them if they can get better ratings (and therefore more money from advertisers) elsewhere....
*snicker*
