From the Quote of the day mailing list I'm on.

I once asked advertising legend Carl Ally what makes the creative person tick. Ally responded, "The creative person wants to be a know-it-all. He wants to know about all kinds of things: ancient history, nineteenth century mathematics, current manufacturing techniques, flower arranging, and hog futures. Because he (or she) never knows when these ideas might come together to form a new idea. It may happen six minutes later or six years down the road. But he has faith that it will happen."

Quotation of the Day for March 12, 2010

"When you write for a living and you can't do anything else, you know that sooner or later that the deadline is going to come screaming down on you like a goddamn banshee. There's no avoiding it...So one day you just don't appear at the El Adobe bar anymore; you shut the door, paint the windows black, rent an electric typewriter and become the monster you always were - the writer."

- Hunter S. Thompson

"God only gives me what he trusts I can handle. I wish he didn't trust me so much." - sign outside a small church on my way to work.

I may not be a Christian, but there are days I can get behind that sentiment.

Today's not one of them (at least not yet), but I grok. and giggle

From the QotD list:

Sometime in the early 1970s, two Buddhist masters met in Cambridge, Massachusetts. One of them, Kalu Rinpoche, was a renowned Tibetan meditation master who had spent many years in solitary retreat in the remote mountain caves of Tibet. The other was Seung Sahn, a Korean Zen master who had recently come to the United States and was supporting himself by working in a Providence, Rhode Island, laundromat, slowly planting the seeds of Zen in the minds of those coming to wash their clothes. At this now famous meeting of enlightened minds, Seung Sahn held up an orange and, in classic Zen dharma combat fashion, demanded, "What is this?"

Kalu Rinpoche just looked at him, wonderingly.

Again Master Seung Sahn asked, "What is this?"

Finally, Rinpoche turned to his translator and asked, "Don't they have oranges in Korea?"

Theophilus thistle, the successful thistle sifter,
While sifting a sieve full of unsifted thistles,
Thrust three thousand thistles through the thick of his thumb.

Now, if Theophilus thistle, the successful thistle sifter,
While sifting a sieve full of unsifted thistles,
Thrust three thousand thistles through the thick of his thumb,
See that thou, while sifting a sieve full of unsifted thistles
Thrust not three thousand thistles through the thick of thy thumb.

Success to the successful thistle sifter!

From an article I'm reading:

When confined to an airplane, DON’T imagine removing your glasses and stripping down to your Superman costume before flying through the window. (Note: It’s perfectly acceptable to wear a Superman costume under real clothes UNLESS it prevents effective listening.)

- Nicholas Christakis, Harvard Medical School professor, from a commentaryposted on the British Medical Journal's website arguing that measures taken toremove peanuts from public spaces are an overreaction to the threat of allergicreaction. He pointed out that 150 people die in the United States annually from food allergies, whereas 1,300 die from gun accidents.

This guy’s walking down a street, when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep, he can’t get out.

A doctor passes by, and the guy shouts up, "Hey you! Can you help me out?" The doctor writes him a prescription, throws it down the hole, and moves on.

Then a priest comes along, and the guy shouts up, "Father, I’m down in this hole! Can you help me out?" The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole, and moves on.

Then a friend walks by. "Hey Joe, it’s me, can you help me out?" And the friend jumps in the hole! Our guy says "Are you stupid? Now we’re both down here!" And the friend says, "Yeah, but I’ve been down here before, and I know the way out."

I will impersonate a man.
His name... Alonso Quijana.
A country gentleman, no longer young.
Being retired, he has much time for books.
He studies them from morn till night...
and often through the night till morn again.
And all he reads oppresses him...
fills him with indignation...
at man's murderous ways towards man.
He ponders the problem... how to make better a world...
where evil brings profit and virtue none at all.
Where fraud, deceit, and malice...
are mingled with truth and sincerity.
He broods and broods and broods and broods...
and broods and finally his brains dry up.
He lays down the melancholy burden of sanity...
and conceives the strangest project ever imagined...
to become a knight-errant, and sally forth...
to roam the world in search of adventures...
to right all wrongs, to mount a crusade...
to raise up the weak and those in need.
He persuades his neighbor, one Sancho Panza...
a country laborer and an honest man...
if the poorer may be called honest...
and he was poor, indeed, to become his squire.
He selects an ancient cart horse called Rosinante...
to become his steed...
and the safeguard of his master's will.
These preparations made, he seizes his lance.
No longer will he be plain Alonso Quijana...
but a dauntless knight...
known as Don Quixote de La Mancha!
