(Since it opens tomorrow)

For me, it's an honor to have someone ask my opinion on the work they have done as a director. Especially when they ask for it when the work is still in process.

A few weeks ago, [livejournal.com profile] persephoneplace asked me to come see the show and provide some play polish. I went and spent an evening with the cast about 2 weeks ago. It was my first time doing any kind of play polish for someone else and it was an interesting experience (and one I hope I get to repeat - if nothing else, the experience of picking apart another director's mind for "why did you make that choice?" was a lot of fun).

I have to be honest - I didn't go in expecting to like it. Margaret Atwood isn't an author I enjoy, nor do I normally enjoy feminist dark plays. I'll also be honest & say that it still isn't my cuppa - Atwood isn't an author I'll ever spend a lot of time really grooving on.

That aside, the show is good. Jessica, who plays Penelope has possibly one of the most brutal parts I've seen in a while - a goodly amount of what she does is monologue, which is hard to do. She engages the audience, letting them have that window into the heart & soul of a woman who finally has perspective on what happened to her.

The communal chorus characters use that communal mouthpiece in really interesting ways. As if their lot in life as the maids had forged them into a single mind, there are many of their speeches that nicely come out as a single thought with many tongues. Add in that they are also all the secondary characters in Penelope's tale and you have something that is occasionally difficult - switching from lusty suitor to servile maid to saucy sailor with little more than a heartbeat between.

It's not an easy play. I applaud the ladies for the work they have done. Here's hoping they get the audience they deserve.

Nothing makes my head feel better than working with competent, talented people doing what they like to do.

Today was the trailer shoot & publicity photo shoot for Beggar's Opera.

I am a happier woman than I was this morning.

Dateline: [livejournal.com profile] much_ado

the reviews (at least those i've seen across LJ) of the show have been overwhelmingly positive. even the Record's review of our problem-plagued Opening Night was gently positive.

this has translated to great word-of-mouth sales, and both the friday and saturday shows of this middle weekend sold out completely, with ~90% of the seats sold on reservation or presale. this means it's highly likely all three shows next weekend will also sell out fast. walk-in ticket availability just doesn't seem to be happening, so don't count on getting tickets that way.

ergo, if you'd like to come see the show before it closes on saturday BOOK YOUR TICKETS RIGHT NOW.

[livejournal.com profile] witchicist says that KWLT's opening is like an action movie.

Now I have a storyline running in my head with [livejournal.com profile] oldgrover as the protagonist in a suspense/action flick about building the theatre...

Kitchener-Waterloo Little Theatre proudly presents:

Les Liasions Dangereuses, by Christopher Hampton

at the rebuilt Kitchener-Waterloo Little Theatre, located in Uptown Waterloo at 9 Princess St. E.

In her performance of 'Les Liasions Dangereuses', Director Karen Grierson moves the story from its origins in pre-Revolutionary France, to Jazz-Age Paris of the 1920s. When asked about her experiences directing this provocative play, Grierson had this to comment: )

Got this second hand, but apparently the shows that I directed and produced for KWLT last year? Profit was $15K.

Not bad.

What happens when you have a sexy play, a brilliant director and a film crew of pure geniuses....

I love getting to play with the folks I do....

Ladies & Gentlemen - the teaser trailer for LLD - I suppose there's a NSFW if you happen to work in a VERY VERY conservative environment - then again, this is a play where sex is a major element.

I'm currently waiting for the final HQ version of the trailer to be delivered to my hot little hands from My Hero.

Once I have that, up Youtube it goes, and then here, FB, eventually the KWLT website, and everywhere else I can think of....

Yes, I'm excited...

Hello all,

As you may know, we've been doing a number of painting/build days lately. That's because we're aiming to open our first production in OUR space, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, in early July.

To do that, we have to have our occupancy permit, as I understand it, by the end of the month.

[livejournal.com profile] oldgrover has been working almost day & night to make this plan a reality, but he really needs your help. In the last while, we've seen a dip in the number of volunteers coming out to help paint.

We need you. Heck, I need you. I truly want to see this magnificent play performed in a stage space that belongs to all of us. To bring home a show to the space that has meant so much to me over the past 18 years.

If you can spare some time, please - come out and help us get ready to be in our own space again. Our home.

You will have the profound thanks and appreciation of a grateful cast, crew, director and producer.

And I'll owe you one.

I'm going to be leading the troops tomorrow night at KWLT - painting - YES - we're finally at the stage we're PAINTING.

I don't know about you, but this is getting so close I can TASTE it.

I watched the building at 9 Princess burn in July 2002. I still remember the phone call from Graham at ugly in the morning asking me to come to the theatre - cause it was on fire.

I remember holding various members of the theatre company as we all cried and cursed and plotted how we would keep the theatre going. I don't remember who came up with the line "The show WILL go on", but I remember a sign being hastily put together and put out front so the world knew that we weren't giving up.

And now we have walls, drywall walls - with electrical, plumbing and a bunch of cat5 (I think) wires in them - and we're SO close to being able to open our doors again to the world as a performance space again.

If you have time tomorrow night, please come help me paint. Help me bring this theatre company home to the best home it's had - to it's heart.

Thanks.
