Problem isn't that I don't believe the instructions. It's that I don't grok them, and given that this is manual dexterity (not my strong suit), I need to see this in action.

Between youtube tutorials and the original instructions, I think I get it now.

Or at least, I hope so.

Following instructions for what to do when one turns the heel of the sock - even when following the "best tutorial on the internet" for it - I am grasping at the proverbial straws...

Youtube, rescue me!

Utterly gorgeous hemp yarns at Lana Knits - Hemp for Knitting - which is at least in Canada.

In BC.

*sigh*

Great stuff on the west coast at Lana.

Great stuff on the east coast - Handmaid yarns, FibreArtist....

Here in Ontario? Not so much....

As those of you who've paid attention before know, I am in lust with many of the yarns at Near Sea Naturals - they have organic animal & plant based yarns - bamboo, merino, cotton, "banana silk", hemp - really lovely , reasonably priced, and a format of materials that calls to my wanna-be-hippy side.

Here's the issue.

They're based in New Mexio.

The W-B-H in me goes "gah - surely you can find higher-minded yarns closer to you.

You'd think that.

*sigh*

Most yarn stores - not so much. I am usually doing well if I can find them carrying something that isn't just plastic yarn and is actually a natural fibre. Then asking for ethical fibres means the price triples.

NSN? They have really reasonable prices.

Gah.

Good price, good product, huge shipping issues.

Local, good product, price gouging.

Gah.

I hate making decisions like this.

So I've got the first sleeve more or less sewn in - still have about 3" left (need to thread up new yarn to finish it).

[livejournal.com profile] woodardp tried it on.

I need to work the collar up a little in pattern before doing the actual collar, but that's no problem. The underarm *fits* and the arm fits him comfortably.

I'm so pleased with myself. This is the first one I designed myself from the get go. It fits (and I learned little details about how to fix things like that in the future), it's pretty, and he's happy.

Hell, if I was actually working on it regularly (on the order of 1 hour per night - time I spend chilling in front of the tube before crashing at the end of the day), I'd have been done a good month ago. I figure there's about ~100 hours of my time in this. I figure I can shave a goodly portion off of that as I get more familiar with doing the math required (and I don't screw up reading the measurements and having to make *3* sleeves).

Yah, there will be pictures when it's done.

I've also done the design work on two more sweaters on my list (leaving 2 more that I know of that I need to source materials and design time for).

Colours and Yarns of HandMaiden Yarns (from FleeceArtist) in Nova Scotia. Dear gods, some of that stuff is beautiful. I also really like the idea of the SeaSilk (70% silk, 30% seaweed)

I think sometime this summer, I need to do some tooling around in the new toy to various yarn places - I want to buy at least from Canada (most of the really gorgeous stuff seems to be all from the US - that I can find online - the Canadian ones all have for crap websites...)

I am going to be in NS this summer.......

Spinrite is having a sale Feb 26-Mar 10. Closed Sundays. There's a bunch of the yarns that are on for a buck a ball, plus they've got the factory seconds on for 20 cents per ounce.

Just information....

KW has a cancer centre.

I was talking to the folks there recently.

I remember when my aunt had cancer, one of the things she said she loved about living in LA was that at least her head wasn't freezing when her hair fell off.

I live in the land of "ice & snow" (though that's been questionable lately.)

I've been knitting lots of hats lately. I've even gotten semi good at it.

(You see where this is going, right???)

I'm planning on knitting some hats to donate to the cancer centre - they can use them. Anyone who's a knitter on my flist want to join me?

I'm starting to think of dying my own yarns. I'm enjoying the knitting, and getting to create my own colourways appeals to me.

This is mostly for my own references.

Can't see it as well as I'd like, but one of the few shots that turned out well.

Ribbed, with cheater cables between the ribbing. Has this lovely swirled look to it near the top.

I also learned to blow up the balloon *in* the hat, as opposed to trying to stuff the hat onto the balloon. Don't ask.

When knitting hats - start with something bigger than a freaking 4mm needle.

IT's going to be gorgeous. It's also going to take MUCH more time than I anticipated. Maybe a month.

For a S&B that was supposed to be cancelled, it was much fun. Got to play with [livejournal.com profile] bridgeoutahead while half-nekkid, and even get some work on [livejournal.com profile] woodardp's sweater.

Contemplating design work for a new sweater I'm working on, thanks to my new "everything you ever bloody needed to know about knitting" book.

Now, if I could just get my legs to *work*

kaloo, kalay, I finished the body of [livejournal.com profile] much_ado's poncho today!

Another craft night done, and another milestone in the poncho o' doom done - now to sew up the shoulders and get cracking on the neck. Think I might take a page out of [livejournal.com profile] corbet's advice and do it with circular needles as opposed to double pointed (may want to borrow your brain, pretty lady).

So that, on top of 6 wheels of brie and 3 cups of ricotta this week - I think I'm doing pretty good on the personal achievement markers...
