Making your own yummy seedy crackers, at least in my world, is a very very good thing.

Chalk up another one for Mr. Brown - weight, not volume, when measuring flours...

I make pretty darned tasty jerky.

Yay for being able to make snacks for the office/rehearsal/etc.

Denka no hoto indeed.

Sweet gods - it went through a 2" diameter carrot like it wasn't there.

I am a very lucky, very happy woman.

[Poll #955994]

Thank you, Gordon Ramsey, for showing me the light...

I found out why you discard the bacon from the soup.

Because after it's been simmering in the soup for the better part of a few hours, there's no "bacony goodness" to it. it's all been absorbed into the soup.

Was actually pretty non-good-tasting (the bacon I removed, not the soup. The soup kicked ass).

I saw an interesting idea the other day while watching Food TV.

A desert that was presented to look like a cup of hot chocolate, whipped cream piled high on it, with a small spoon in the cup for mixing.

It was actually a mocha-chocolate cake, baked individually in the mugs, with a marshmallow that had been flavoured with Grand Marnier and piped to look like whipped cream. the spoon was a cookie. They served it with a small shooter of butterscotch rum sauce.

I liked the idea - basically a modern day subtlety (theoretical medieval practice of making one food look like something else).

I'm toying around with doing something like this.

Trying to think of what I could make things look like.

What would you like to see arrive at the end of a lovely meal as a "finish" - talking eye appeal here, not what you want to eat

I have an herb garden - one of the "makes Nita happy" things that got done outside this spring.

One of the things in it that's still harvestable (cause I live in the Great White North, doncha know), is rosemary.

I know all the usual stuff for playing with rosemary, but I ask you - anyone have anything that doesn't involve lamb or poultry or soapmaking that uses rosemary that I might try?

I canned. And chopped. And sliced. And froze.

The final fruits of my labour? This plus 6.5lbs of chopped garlic and 5lbs of sliced mushrooms in the freezer.

I'm very happy. I may need to readdress the hot pepper jelly (doesn't seem to have jelled much), but that's easy enough.

*heee*

I'm such a food geek.

Some people eat when they get depressed.

I apparently cook. And preserve.

I'm not depressed any more.

My larder is much more full.

Photos to follow.

5lbs of mushrooms makes one large amount of cream of mushroom soup base.

For those who had it, this is the same stuff I did for the A&S feast that [livejournal.com profile] much_ado autocratted. Totally vegetarian friendly, stupidly easy, trivially changed to any other veg, and now that it's going into jars for preserving, storable, so if I need cream of mushroom soup for something, I haul out a jar, crack it open, add a little milk or cream, and voila.

Campbell's, eat your heart out.

It's time to pass the paste pot to me.

Sunday night - Nita's making stock. Smells yummy. Want to check on contents of pot. Lift lid. Wrong way (aka with the opening towards the arm holding the lid). Now have a nasty steam burn on my right forearm.

Blister is currently about 2cm on a side, and sticks out about a half cm. Keeping it covered, and just waiting. Yes, I've had it checked out (wouldn't have bothered, but I was at the MD's yesterday anyway, so figured I'd show him - he agrees I'm doing the right thing (sadly, not a surprise, I've done this enough over the years...I'm good with burns...))

Pass the paste - I shouldn't have gotten this burn.

As [livejournal.com profile] woodardp pointed out yesterday, there's a certain viceral appeal to rending a HUNK of meat into ground meat.

Tonight, prior to me being whisked away by [livejournal.com profile] bridgeoutahead, I'm going to try stuffing it back into some semblance of a form...

Yes, I'm being deliberately obscure. But I'm having fun.

Nita's playing with sharp things, her kitchen and gobs of meat....be afraid....

I spent the weekend baking cheesecake.

There are now 8 of them in my freezer. I will be making another tonight.

I haven't eaten *any* of them.

I am so good.*G*

Wedding dinner was Friday night. theAngel & I didn't get out of there until close to 12:30, with cleanup - apparently no one in charge of the dancing after decided to provide things to eat/drink off/out of - which meant the stuff we brought for dinner wound up having to get recycled a few dozen times.

*shrug* Things to put on the "questions" list if I ever do this again. I'll be putting notes up here (good a place as any) wrt that later (when I'm better rested & back doesn't hurt so badly).

Would I do that again? Oh, yah. Was there enough food for an army? Yup - need to work on convincing future clients of the value of fewer dishes and work on my own "gack, there isn't enough" response.

And I love automatic dishwashers.
